Enterprise Data Storage EPEAT Product Category Proposal
The EPEAT® Product Category Proposal for Enterprise Data Storage explores the growing global demand for data storage solutions driven by technological advancements such as IoT, cloud computing, and AI. It highlights the substantial energy consumption and sustainability impact of these products, which account for 11% of data center energy use. The proposal draws on the Global Electronics Council’s (GEC) State of Sustainability Research to analyze lifecycle impacts, including carbon emissions, resource utilization, chemicals of concern, and supply chain responsibilities. By addressing these areas, the proposal outlines strategies for sustainable manufacturing, energy efficiency, and circular economy practices.
GEC’s proposal emphasizes the business case for expanding the EPEAT ecolabel to include enterprise data storage products, enabling purchasers to identify sustainable options. It proposes to leverages criteria from related ICT categories, adapting them to the unique requirements of enterprise storage systems. With data storage projected to exceed $100 billion by 2029, this initiative aligns with global sustainability goals, helping manufacturers and buyers mitigate sustainability impacts and achieve net-zero and circular economy objectives.
