The EU New Batteries Regulation entered into force 17 August 2023. Annex 1 Restriction on Substances has been updated and states: from August 18, 2024, portable batteries, whether or not incorporated into appliances, shall not contain more than 0.01 % of lead (expressed as lead metal) by weight. Computers and Displays, Imaging Equipment, Televisions, Mobile Phones, Network Equipment and Servers Criteria Documents include the following statement for applying normative references: In the case of EU Directives, which contain an adoption date in their title, when the EU repeals a directive and replaces it with a new directive, or otherwise edits and updates a directive, the new directive will apply as the referenced directive upon its enforcement date, unless otherwise explicitly stated in the normative reference. Each EPEAT® Criterion provides additional information, specifically:
- Imaging Equipment, Servers and Televisions require the battery to comply with the material content limits of the Battery Directive effect when the product is EPEAT registered.
- Network Equipment requires the battery to comply with the material content limits of the Battery Directive effect at the date of battery manufacture.
- Computers and Displays requires ongoing conformance to the current version of the EU Battery Directive.
- Mobile Phones requires products to meet the threshold limits stated in the Criterion (20 ppm for cadmium and 5 ppm mercury).
